Homebound or Hospitalized

Referral Process

A request for homebound/hospitalized instructional program eligibility consideration may be directed to the district program specialist by whomever has an educational interest in the student who may be confined to the home or hospital for a physical or medical condition

Eligibility

Certification by a licensed physician that a student is:

  1. expected to be absent from school due to a physical or medical condition for a minimum of 15 consecutive school days (or block schedule equivalent),

  2. confined to the home or hospital,

  3. able to participate in and benefit from an instructional program and is under medical care for illness or injury that is acute or catastrophic in nature.

          Additionally,

  1. a licensed physician must certify that the student can receive an instructional program without endangering the health of the instructor or other students with whom the instructor may come in contact,

  2. the student must be five years of age or older and must be enrolled in a public school unless the student meets eligibility criteria for another exceptional student education program, and

  3. the parent or primary caregiver must sign an agreement concerning homebound or hospitalized policies and parental cooperation.

Support Services

Any support service available to other students and satisfactorily deliverable in the home or hospital environment is available to a homebound or hospitalized program student based upon need and physician approval.

Curriculum

The curriculum being followed by students prior to homebound or hospitalized program eligibility is continued during participation in the program.  Most often this is the general curriculum (Sunshine State Standards) leading to a standard diploma or the Sunshine State Standards for a Special Diploma.

Training

Homebound or Hospitalized Program teachers participate in any training or professional development activities available to other district teachers.
